Why armwrestling is the greatest sport
Simon Berriochoa: " Here is a brief story from the worlds...
Sunday night before the event, massive amounts of international pullers were showing up, there was at least 100 athletes in line trying to check into the hotel, many due to the fact they had not made proper arrangements and or due to their limited English skills were taking a great deal of time to their rooms. Myself, Bill, Ginger, and Willy were there desperately trying to help everyone we could, it was pretty crazy.
At the end of this massive line, I see a young Hispanic man and his new wife still dressed from their wedding, they were clearly in need of some front desk help. So I took him from the back of the line to the front, so he could get on with his honeymoon.
While I tried to help the team that was at the reservation agent, at that moment so they could hurry up and help this man, the quiet young groom got involved in a conversation with a member of one of the teams, I won't embarrass him by using his name but he is one of my favorite people in the sport. In the end after the armwrestler congratulated the groom on his wedding and asked a few questions he managed to convince the groom to accept a very nice amount of cash as a wedding gift from him, he explained that is very customary in his country to do so.
Imagine going from being at the back of a line of 100 international athletes with no quick end in sight to being at the front and being handed cash as wedding gift from a complete stranger.
Generally armwrestlers are the best people I have ever had the privilege to be involved with and as much as I enjoy the competition, the people really are why I love this sport. "
